Breast-feeding in Public
Health professionals and public health officials have launched national campaigns promote breastfeeding to improve infant health. It’s common knowledge that both mothers and children benefit from breast milk and mothers have been doing it for thousands of years - so why is breast-feeding in public such a problem lately?
You hear about nursing moms kicked off of airplanes, banned from restaurants and excluded from other public spaces. With over 74% of new moms nursing their babies according to the CDC and only 39 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands have laws with language specifically allowing women to breastfeed in any public or private location what is a nursing mother to do?
Nursing clothing specifically designed not just for fashion but function - are a great resource for nursing mothers. Nursing tops have a variety of options that provide for easy nursing access while maintaining a level of discretion required for nursing in public. Nursing wraps, shawls and slings can also be used to nurse in public while preserving a level of modesty acceptable in public. Only 25 states and the Virgin Islands exempt breastfeeding from public indecency laws - so until the rest do too, nursing moms will have to cover-up while nursing in public.
